Waitangi day - the day where we celebrate the birth of our nation.  (cough cough) or do we?

What are you doing to mark Waitangi day - anything?

If nothing, is it because it is a sunday and not another day off that is affecting you?

What does Waitangi day mean to you?

I am going to go into school - I have a lot to catch up on as the beginnning of the year is crazy - plus I need to get everything out of the way so I can get into setting up our G & T programme.

Sunday - no day off, well, we all need a holiday Big Smile  But it would tack n another day at the end of the year, which is finishing close enough to Christmas as it is, so really I am pleased to not have a day off (Easter in 7 weeks - woohoo!)

Waitangi day means to me - a day I avoid the news as I get upset that we cannot, for one day, celebrate our country.  For some, they may believe that it is vaild to protest on a day with all the issues that are involved, but if that is so, then it should not be a holiday, we should have some other day where we can be patriotic and really celebrate the good things in this country - something we dont do anywhere near enough.

I do think of it as the birth of a nation. Although I certainly feel that the Treaty should have been upheld longer than the 10 years approx that it was. Past mistakes have made it a day that many people would rather forget.

Nothing really. Waitangi day is the birthday of a very good friend of ours, so we did drive to Auckland to havea small party for her. Doug's bro is in the Navy and they are at Waitangi today

If it had been a Monday it would have been better - simply cos I could have stayed in Auckland a bit longer...and had my weekend sleep in, which I kinda missed out on - but it was fun anyways!

What does Waitangi day mean to you?

That a treaty was signed between two peoples, and that at that time there was a genuine intent from both parties to make a new nation that would work - although obviously there were differences of opinion on how things would work.

Maybe we don't celebrate our country enough but we have to acknowledge what the protestors are protesting about.  Perhaps Waitangi day isn't the best choice for airing their grievances but would any other day be more suitable?

It is awful to say, but perhaps replacing Waitangi Day with another day where we try to celebrate all that is right and good about New Zealand is a waste of time because the protestors will just protest on that day instead.

I don necessarily think it should be replaced, I just think that originally it was a day of celebration, now it is a day of protest (and yes, that is a good thing for many reasons) but I dont believe that we should even pretend that waitangi day is a type of NZ day anymore.

Maybe there should be another day for NZ/Aotearoa day, where we can truely reflect on our achievements as a nation.
